An extrait usually costs more than the eau de parfum of the same perfume, and the word on the box promises “more”. But more of what, exactly? Among the perfumes our team has fact-checked, a typical extrait costs ₹42 per ml against ₹30 for a typical eau de parfum, about 39% more. Here is what “extrait de parfum” means, what really changes when a perfume becomes an extrait, and when the extra rupees are worth it.
Key takeaways
- “Extrait de parfum” is French for “perfume extract”: the most concentrated version most brands sell, usually described as about 20% perfume oil or more.
- There is no legal standard. Brands decide the strength, and sometimes change the formula as well as the concentration.
- Per ml, a typical extrait on our shelves costs ₹42 against ₹30 for a typical EDP, but bottle size can flip that maths.
- You need fewer sprays: one or two is usually enough, which makes an extrait easier to wear in an office than its name suggests.
What does “extrait de parfum” mean?
Extrait is French for “extract”, so extrait de parfum simply means “perfume extract”. It is the top of the usual concentration ladder (cologne, eau de toilette, eau de parfum, then extrait), and brands also call it parfum or pure parfum. References disagree on the exact range: some put extraits at 15–30% perfume oil, others at 20–40%. The honest answer is that each brand decides for itself, because no law fixes these percentages. For the full ladder with prices, see EDP vs EDT vs extrait vs parfum vs attar.
Extrait vs EDP vs parfum: what changes and what does not
- What usually changes: more perfume oil and less alcohol. An extrait tends to open more softly, develop more slowly and sit closer to the skin, so one or two sprays do the job of three or four.
- What sometimes changes: the formula itself. Brands often rework a perfume for its extrait version, so read the notes of the exact bottle you are buying.
- What does not change: the basic rules. An extrait made of citrus and fresh notes can still fade faster than an EDP built on amber and vanilla, and your skin and the weather matter as much as the label.
- Parfum vs extrait: in practice the same tier. Designer houses tend to say “parfum”; many Arabian houses say “extrait”. Armaf calls its version of Club de Nuit Intense Man “Pure Parfum”.
- “Elixir”, “Intense” and “Absolu” are names, not concentrations, although some of them are extraits. Our guide to flanker names decodes them.
Names can mislead in the other direction too. Ahmed Al Maghribi’s Kaaf Noir is sold as an eau de parfum on the brand’s UAE site and UK store, yet its US store lists it as an extrait. When in doubt, check the brand’s own listing for the exact bottle.

What the numbers tell you
- Same notes, almost double the price per ml. Club de Nuit Iconic Extrait lists exactly the same notes as the EDP, but costs ₹74 per ml against ₹40. You are paying for concentration, not a new scent.
- Bottle size can beat concentration. Club de Nuit Intense Man Pure Parfum (₹34 per ml) costs less per ml than the lighter EDT (₹38) because it comes in a 150ml bottle, and the 200ml EDP is cheapest of all at ₹30.
- Sometimes it is a different perfume. Liquid Brun EDP is a spiced vanilla (cinnamon, bergamot, cardamom and orange blossom over praline, musk and guaiac wood). The Limited Edition extrait is built differently: citrus notes, lavender and cardamom, then orange blossom, rose and guaiac wood, then dry amber, vanilla, tonka bean and oakmoss. Read the notes before you “upgrade”.
- Big bottles save money. The 150ml Supremacy Not Only Intense works out ₹9 per ml cheaper than the 100ml, and Mykonos Conquer is ₹8 per ml cheaper in the 100ml size.
- Extraits do not have to be expensive. Lattafa Fakhar Extrait costs ₹2,200 (₹22 per ml) and Khadlaj Island Extrait ₹2,400, less than many eaux de parfum.
Who should buy an extrait?
- Yes, if you wear perfume mostly in the evening, at weddings or in the cooler months, or you love a scent and want its richest version.
- Yes, for the office if you can stop at one spray. Because extraits tend to stay closer to the skin, a single spray can be gentler on colleagues than four sprays of an EDT.
- Think twice for humid summer days if you like an airy, fresh feel. An EDT or a fresh EDP is easier at noon in Mumbai or Chennai.
- On a budget? Compare price per ml, then remember you will use fewer sprays of an extrait each day, so the bottle can last longer.
How to wear an extrait
- Start with one spray on the neck or chest; add a second only after 20–30 minutes.
- Do not judge it in the first minute. Extraits often open quietly and build. Your nose also gets used to a scent quickly (see why you can’t smell your own perfume).
- In peak heat, keep extraits for evenings and air-conditioned rooms.
- Count your sprays: our guide to how many sprays are in a 100ml bottle turns them into cost per wear.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between extrait de parfum and eau de parfum?
An extrait usually contains more perfume oil and less alcohol than an eau de parfum, so it needs fewer sprays and tends to sit closer to the skin. Some brands also change the formula between the two.
Is extrait de parfum stronger than parfum?
Usually they are the same tier. “Parfum”, “pure parfum” and “extrait de parfum” all describe a brand’s most concentrated version.
Does extrait de parfum last longer?
Often, but not always. A higher concentration helps, yet the notes, your skin and the weather matter as much. A fresh citrus extrait can fade sooner than a rich amber EDP.
How many sprays of extrait should I use?
One or two. Start with one and add another after 20–30 minutes if you need it.
Is “Elixir” the same as extrait?
No. Elixir is a name. Some elixirs are extraits and others are eaux de parfum, so check the concentration printed on the bottle.
