In everyday Indian speech, “deo” can mean almost any scented spray in a can. So people buy a deo expecting it to last like a perfume, or spray perfume under their arms and wonder why it does nothing for sweat. In the US, the Food and Drug Administration even regulates them differently: a deodorant is a cosmetic, while an antiperspirant, which reduces sweat, is treated as a drug. Here is what each one is for, how strong it is and how to use them together when the temperature crosses 40°C.
Key takeaways
- A deodorant works on odour and an antiperspirant on sweat. Body sprays and body mists add light fragrance; a perfume is the most concentrated.
- Many “deos” are perfumed body sprays. If the label doesn’t say antiperspirant, it isn’t meant to reduce sweat.
- “No gas” deos are pump sprays; aerosols use a liquefied gas to push the liquid out of the can.
- In summer: deodorant on your underarms first, then perfume on your neck, chest or clothes, never under your arms.
- We stock 23 deodorants and body sprays (10 of them sticks) at a typical price of ₹1,800. Our typical eau de parfum costs ₹2,899.
Deo, antiperspirant, body spray, body mist and perfume at a glance
| Product | Main job | Fragrance strength | Where to use it | How long the scent stays |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Deodorant | Masks or reduces body odour | None to light | Underarms | Scent fades fast |
| Antiperspirant | Reduces sweat where applied | None to light | Underarms only | Not a fragrance product |
| Body spray (“deo”) | Light, all-over fragrance | Low | Chest, torso, clothes | A few hours at most |
| Body mist | A soft, quick refresh | Lowest, often quoted at 3% or less | Body and clothes | Often an hour or two |
| Perfume (EDT, EDP, extrait) | Long-lasting fragrance | Highest, roughly 5% to over 20% | Neck, wrists, chest, clothes | Several hours; EDP and extrait longest |
Brands rarely publish exact fragrance percentages, so the strengths above are rough guides, not rules. How long any scent stays also depends on your skin, the weather and how much you use.
Deodorant vs antiperspirant: smell or sweat?
A deodorant is about smell: it covers or reduces body odour, with or without a fragrance. An antiperspirant is about sweat. The FDA defines it as a product that reduces the production of sweat where you apply it, so the agency regulates it as an over-the-counter drug, not only as a cosmetic. Many underarm products are both, and the label says so. The FDA explains the difference on its page “Is it a cosmetic, a drug, or both?”
In practice: if your problem is wet patches on a shirt, a fragrance spray will not solve it, so look for the word “antiperspirant” on the pack. Sticks and roll-ons put the product exactly where it is needed; sprays cover more area and dry faster.
Body spray: what most of us call a deo
Many cans sold as “deodorant body spray” are fragrance-led. They are made to be sprayed generously over the chest, back and clothes, so the fragrance is far more diluted than in a perfume. That makes a body spray a good morning basic and an easy budget pick, but not a substitute for a perfume on a wedding night. Read the small print: some say “perfume spray” or “body spray”, others “deodorant” or “antiperspirant”, and only the last one is meant to reduce sweat.
Body mist vs perfume
A body mist is the lightest fragrance format of all. Fragrance references usually put mists and splashes at around 3% fragrance oil or less, so you can spray them freely and reapply. They suit hot afternoons, a college bag or a quick refresh after the metro.
A perfume carries far more fragrance oil, so two or three sprays go much further. An eau de toilette is the lighter option, an eau de parfum is fuller and an extrait is the most concentrated. For a light daytime perfume in summer, an EDT sits between a mist and an EDP. Our guide to EDP vs EDT vs extrait vs attar explains the labels with real prices.
“No gas” deo vs aerosol: what is the difference?
An aerosol can holds the deodorant liquid together with a propellant, a liquefied gas kept under pressure. When you press the nozzle, the propellant pushes the liquid out and breaks it into a fine, fast-drying spray. A “no gas” deo has no propellant. It is a pump spray, like a perfume bottle, and everything inside is liquid. Pumps became popular in India over the last decade or so, sold on the promise of more sprays per bottle.
| Aerosol deo | “No gas” (pump) deo | |
|---|---|---|
| How it sprays | Fine, dry mist that spreads wide | Wetter spray, closer to a perfume |
| What is inside | Liquid plus propellant gas | Liquid only |
| Handle with care | Pressurised can: keep it away from heat and direct sun, and never leave it in a parked car | Usually alcohol-based, so keep it away from flames and heat too |
Neither format is automatically stronger or better, so read the label for the type and compare quantities before prices. Flying soon? Sprays count as liquids in hand baggage; see can you carry perfume on a flight from India.
How to use them together in Indian summer
- Start with clean, dry skin. Underarm products go on best after a shower, once you have dried off properly.
- Underarms first. Use a deodorant or antiperspirant, unscented or from the same line as your perfume so the two do not clash. Let it dry for a minute before you dress.
- Then perfume. Two or three sprays on the neck, chest or collar are enough in the heat. Keep perfume away from your underarms, because it is not made to control odour and sweat changes how it smells. Our guide to where to apply perfume has the full placement map.
- Refresh lightly. At lunch, a body mist or one spray of perfume is enough; a strong deo sprayed over perfume in a closed office is usually too much. For the gym, deodorant before and perfume after.

Matching deo and perfume: examples from our shelves
The easiest way to avoid a clash is a deodorant or body spray in the same scent as your perfume. Four examples (prices as of 15 October 2026):
Arabiyat Oud Al Layl Gift Set (EDP + deodorant) – ₹1,499
A 100ml eau de parfum and a 200ml deodorant, both sold under the Oud Al Layl name. Despite the name, the brand’s note list has no oud: it is a rosy, softly sweet woody scent of rose, orange and fruity notes over violet, cedarwood and sugar over musk, moss and patchouli. Deodorant for hot days, perfume for evenings. Sold as unisex.
Afnan 9PM Perfume Spray (body spray) – ₹549, with Afnan 9PM EDP 100ml – ₹3,300
Afnan prints “Perfume Spray” on this aerosol can: it is a body spray in the 9PM scent, not an antiperspirant. The scent matches the eau de parfum: apple, cinnamon, lavender and bergamot over a base of vanilla, tonka, amber and patchouli. Sweet and warm, it is happiest on summer evenings. Use the spray by day and keep one or two sprays of the EDP for going out. Both are sold for men.
Armaf Club de Nuit Women Gift Set (EDP + body spray) – ₹3,200
A 105ml eau de parfum with a perfume body spray in the same scent: bergamot, grapefruit, peach and orange, then geranium, jasmine, litchi and rose, then musk, patchouli, vanilla and vetiver. Fruity and floral, with a soft musky finish. Spray the body spray in the morning and the EDP for evenings out. Sold for women.
Carolina Herrera Bad Boy Deodorant Spray 100ml – ₹2,849
A designer deodorant in the Bad Boy scent: bergamot, pink pepper and white pepper, then cedarwood and clary sage, then tonka bean and cocoa. Its ingredient list on Carolina Herrera’s website starts with alcohol, water and fragrance and has no propellant gas, so this is a pump spray: the designer version of a “no gas” deo. Sold for men.
Prefer a stick? The Porsche Design Palladium Deodorant Stick 75ml (₹1,799) carries the Palladium scent, with cardamom and mandarin over lavender, cedar and amber. See all deodorants and body sprays and deodorant sticks we stock.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which is better, deo or perfume?
Neither – they do different jobs. A deodorant or antiperspirant looks after your underarms; a perfume is the fragrance people notice. In hot weather it makes sense to use both.
Can I use deo and perfume together?
Yes. Apply deodorant or antiperspirant to dry underarms first, let it dry, then spray perfume on your neck, chest or clothes. An unscented deodorant, or one from the same line as your perfume, avoids a clash.
What does “no gas” deo mean?
It is a pump spray with no propellant, so the bottle holds only liquid. An aerosol deo uses a liquefied gas to push the liquid out as a fine spray.
Does a deo last longer than a perfume?
Usually not. A body spray is far more diluted than an eau de parfum. If you want a scent to stay through the day, choose an EDP or extrait and apply it well.
