What Is Oud? A Beginner’s Guide to Oud Perfumes

Oud is the most famous – and most misunderstood – ingredient in Arabian perfumery. Some people love its deep, smoky richness from the first sniff; others find it too strong until they try a softer blend. This guide explains what oud actually is, what it smells like, how to wear it in Indian weather, and how to pick your first oud perfume, with verified examples from our store.

Key takeaways

  • Oud (also called agarwood) is a fragrant resin that forms inside Aquilaria trees when the wood is infected by a type of mould.
  • Natural oud is rare and expensive, so most perfumes use an oud “accord” built by perfumers, sometimes with a little natural oud.
  • Oud smells woody, smoky and leathery – modern perfumes soften it with rose, saffron, vanilla or amber.
  • Most oud perfumes are unisex. Start with a rose-oud or a fresher “blue” oud, and wear it in the evening or in winter.
  • A perfume name is not a note list: one popular “Bade’e Al Oud” fragrance contains no oud at all. Always check the notes.

What is oud?

Oud comes from trees of the Aquilaria genus, which grow across South and South-East Asia. When the heartwood is infected by a mould, the tree defends itself by producing a dark, fragrant resin. That resin-soaked wood is called agarwood, and the oil distilled from it is oud. India’s north-east, especially Assam, has a long history of agarwood production.

Because wild agarwood became scarce, the international trade in Aquilaria is regulated, and natural oud oil remains one of the most expensive perfume materials in the world. That is why almost every affordable “oud perfume” uses an oud accord – a blend that recreates the character of oud – rather than large amounts of natural oil.

What does oud smell like?

Depending on the blend, oud can smell:

  • Woody and dry – like old, polished wood
  • Smoky and resinous – close to incense
  • Leathery – warm and slightly animalic
  • Medicinal or “barnyard” – in raw, natural ouds; most modern perfumes keep this side subtle

Perfumers usually pair oud with rose, saffron, amber, vanilla or fresh notes so that it is easier to wear.

The main styles of oud perfume

Style What it is like Good for
Rose-oud Rose softens the wood and adds elegance Beginners, weddings, evenings
Saffron-oud Spicy, leathery and rich Winter, formal occasions
Sweet / amber oud Vanilla, amber or caramel round off the edges Cooler months, nights out
Fresh or “blue” oud Citrus, aromatic or aquatic notes over an oud base Beginners, office evenings, milder weather
Oud attar Oud in oil, applied in dabs Traditional wear, layering

Four oud perfumes to start with (verified notes)

We checked the notes of each perfume below against the brand and Fragrantica, because oud fragrances are often described inaccurately online.

1. Ahmed Al Maghribi Blu Oud EDP 100ml – ₹2,900

A fresh, woody way into oud. Bergamot and cypress with a leather edge open the scent, a heart of incense, violet leaf and geranium follows, and the base brings oud (agarwood), guaiac wood, patchouli and musk. A sensible first oud for anyone wary of heavy scents.

2. Fragrance World Barakkat Satin Oud EDP 100ml – ₹1,800

Violet and rose wrapped around oud, softened by vanilla with a resinous amber and benzoin warmth. A smooth rose-oud at an accessible price.

3. IBRAQ (Ibraheem Al Qurashi) Blue Oud – Alwafiyah Collection, 100ml – ₹3,800

Oud is right at the top here, lifted by a fresh blue-lily note, with leather and patchouli in the heart and a tobacco and amber base. Darker and more traditional than the first two.

4. Lattafa Bade’e Al Oud – Oud for Glory EDP 100ml – ₹2,950

A dark oud-and-patchouli woody scent. Lattafa’s own note list adds a fruity-spicy opening of bergamot, blackcurrant and pink pepper and a caramel and peony heart. One of the most popular Arabian ouds of recent years.

Not every “oud” is an oud

Names can mislead. Lattafa Bade’e Al Oud Honor & Glory belongs to Lattafa’s Bade’e Al Oud line, but its notes list no oud at all – it is a sweet, spicy gourmand of caramelised pineapple, cinnamon, turmeric and vanilla. It is a lovely perfume, just not an oud. Always read the notes, not only the name.

How to wear oud in Indian weather

  • Winter and wedding season are made for oud – the cool air keeps it from feeling heavy. See our winter picks and wedding season guide.
  • Summer: choose a fresh or rose-oud, wear it in the evening, and use one or two sprays.
  • Office: one spray, or a single dab of oud attar, is plenty.
  • Layering: a dab of oud attar under a fresh spray gives depth without heaviness – see attar vs perfume.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is oud the same as agarwood?

Yes. Agarwood is the resin-filled wood; oud usually refers to the oil or the scent made from it.

Why is real oud so expensive?

Agarwood forms slowly and only in infected trees, wild trees became scarce, and the trade is regulated. Natural oud oil is therefore rare, which is why most perfumes use oud accords.

Is oud only for men?

No. Most oud perfumes are unisex, and rose-ouds are especially popular with women. Browse our men’s and women’s perfumes or the full new arrivals.

Can I wear oud in summer?

Yes, with care: choose a fresher oud, wear it in the evening and keep to one or two sprays.

Does every perfume with “oud” in its name contain oud?

No. Some product lines use “oud” in their name for fragrances that contain none, so check the listed notes.
